Help us spread the word and encourage the middle- and high-school students you know to apply for the free, two-week Summer Physics Camp for Young Women, June 5-16 2023.
Camp is back in person this year! This unique program will take place at the New Mexico School for the Arts in Santa Fe and the Hilo Intermediate School in Hilo, Hawaii.
This year: Energy and energy security
Hosted and organized this year as a partnership between Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories, the camp will explore topics related to energy and energy security — reliable, affordable access to all fuels and energy sources and cybersecurity — and offer activities, speakers, a tour of Lab user facilities and virtual tours of Sandia National Labs, a multiday hands-on project and much more.
The main goal of the camp is to help boost participants’ understanding of and excitement toward STEM, STEM careers and the mission of the national laboratories.
Presenters include scientists, engineers and other professionals from Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories as well as from industry, a majority of whom are women. Approximately 32 campers will be accepted to the New Mexico camp, and 10 campers will be accepted to the Hawaii camp.
Benefits for campers
Students will also learn professional development skills, such as how to write a resume and how to apply and interview for a job. The camp will introduce students to further career options, including internships at Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories, military careers in STEM and opportunities at local New Mexico and Hawaii colleges.
Not only is the camp free, but campers will also receive a paid stipend upon completion. After the camp, students will have the opportunity to apply for specially funded internships at Los Alamos and to continue their career exploration through the SAGE Journey program.
How to apply
Here are the eligibility requirements:
- Open to students living in New Mexico (including tribal communities) or East Hawaii Island who are women (including transgender women) or nonbinary
- Applicants must have completed Algebra 1 or a higher-level math course
- Applicants must be able to commit to two full weeks of participation
- Acceptance to the camp is not based on GPA
Applications are due Saturday, April 1. Students should give themselves time to secure a letter of recommendation and school transcripts for the application.
